A question just arose on Twitter: how should a leaderboard on PS3Heroes look like?
Basically you could do one based on the overall number of trophies, but that would not be fair to new, but skilled PS3 owners. So the other idea would be to do one weekly and only count the trophies earned during this period. As I would base this on the overall trophy numbers, this ranking would also reflect trophies that I cannot yet display - like those of ModNation Racers.
Sometime in the future, I would also like to have a better measurement, how good someone really is in gaming. Having 100 silver trophies from 100 games is easier than 100 silver trophies from 20 games. On the other hand that also depends on the actual games.
One idea I has is to look how many people own a game and see how many people of those owners actually got a certain trophy. This way it would be easier to determine how difficult a trophy is to get. "Difficult" here must not only be described in skills, but also in determination of the player. Getting trophies in some games might not require much skills, but the games are probably boring or even had to get anyway. Getting trophies in these games is more valueable than others.
But this gets really complicated when you think about when someone gets such a trophy. Getting a platinum within the first few weeks after a game release is probably harder than a year later when you could get walkthroughs...
Do you have any other ideas or whishes on this topic?

I think that a kind of trophy leader board or Top10 amongst site members would be a lot of fun. Plus it would probably make me a little more determined to get those awkward pain in the ass trophies that are almost impossible to obtain.
I think that a simple total number of trophies awarded per week would be a good general top 10 system. This would solely be based on total of new trophies obtained within that gaming week. This way every one has an equal chance of just plain old hardcore gaming over a week to get up on the board.
Like you say this wouldn't account for the difficulty level of the individual trophy but for a general competition it's a good solid marker I reckon.
I do see the problem area you outline though above. Perhaps leader boards could then be broken down into a board for each individual game rather than trophy types. That way you might get one point for a bronze, 2 for a silver and so on so the person with the most points, which is gained from trophy hunting, ends up on top of the board for a while.
I'm not sure how practical this idea is in reality, but it's just a possiblility. I think it would stop a lot of complication with working out trophy values etc.

The weekly stats shouldn't be a problem. I will start gathering the data on next monday and start displaying the leaderboard then. After that the top 10 will be placed in the weekly stats mail.

Awesome!!!! See how it all works out after a few weeks. I'm sure improvements, if any are needed at all, will present themselves.
Can't wait, thanks for listening. Interested to see what peoples reactions are going to be when they see Top10 rankings in their mail.

The problem with trophies is that you can't really use them as a measure of a player's skill.
There are difficult trophies which anyone can get with the aid of a walkthrough, even if it takes them many attempts. But there are also easy trophies which are hidden, and even the most skilful players may never unlock them without using a walkthrough.
Then there are trophies which are completely unrelated to skill, and only require playing a game for a certain amount of time.
My point here is that you can't really judge the amount of skill required to obtain a trophy simply by seeing how long it's taken a person to obtain it. Some may spend hours searching, some may use a walkthrough and get it quickly, while others may just unlock it simply by pure luck.
Also, getting a Platinum a year later could simply mean that they didn't buy the game when it was released, but picked it up months later when the price dropped.
Perhaps you could just make the leaderboard sortable by each type of trophy, so we can see who has the most of each type? For me, the 'better' gamers are those who have the most Platinums, rather than those who have the most trophies over all. It shows they persevere, rather than racing through games and mopping up as many easy trophies as possible.
I'm currently Level 12 with 11 Platinums, but there are people the same level or higher who have fewer. Generally they tend to have many more Bronze from many more games - which for me, is where the trophy system falls down; you can race up the levels without ever actually earning Gold or Platinum trophies.

I like the idea of trophy sections Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum weekly tallies and just to throw another idea into the mix maybe a monthly/weekly level up mention i.e this months members x y z all levelled up with x hitting level 4, y hitting 2 and z levelling up 2 levels to 9 etc .
Them maybe some members could have a " Race to level ..... " between themselves plus may get some banter going on the forum.

If it's going to be a true measure of Trophy skill it should be based on number of games verses number of platinums with some way of voting on the difficulty of each game. A platinum in Resistance 2 will be a little alot hard than say one in Hanna Montana. I respect people who take the time to earn so many Platinum trophies even if I think they are a bit crazy. If I own 50 games and only have 2 platinums, someone who owns 30 games, but has 10 platinums should rank higher than me. That would also weed out Game renters who get 40-50% of the trophies and have like 2500 trophies but have very few platinums. I do like the idea of coming up with 3-4 variations of leader boards.

By taking the ratio between game owners and trophy earners, I would try to make this "voting of difficulty" a bit more automated. The idea behind this is, that more people will probably have Hannah Montana and earned the platinum than the same with Resistance 2.
Although I have to admit that I yet did not check my database if this is really the case.
